Places of Interest

The Isle of Wight is steeped in history with its churches, castles, manor houses and  fortifications, and to many visitors the Towns and Villages hold a special fascination.

 

Osborne House.

With Queen Victoria and Prince Albert bringing the royal stamp of approval with their residence at Osborne House, many other famous Victorians visited and settled on the Island.

 

Carisbrooke.

Visit Carisbrooke Castle and enjoy over 800 years of history. The Isle of Wight’s royal castle is remarkably complete, with battlements to march across, a keep to climb and a museum to explore. Discover why it was famous as a royal prison to Charles I, see the room from which he tried to escape twice!

The most famous residents today, however, are the Carisbrooke Donkeys. Watch them happily at work on the sixteenth-century tread wheel in the well house and visit them in the donkey centre where you can find more about their personalities. Look out for the fun-packed family events every summer, offering one of the best family days out in on the Isle of Wight.

 

Yarmouth Castle.

Explore this Tudor castle set in the beautiful old seaside town, climb the battlements to enjoy the best views of sailing in the Solent. Commanding the mouth of the Solent since 1547, Yarmouth was the first 'Arrowhead' castle in Britain.

 

Appuldurcombe House.

Only minutes walk from our doorstep, once the grandest house on the Island, its history is stepped in scandal and intrigue, now mainly a shell, Appludurcombe is set in grounds designed by 'Capability' Brown.

The Needles Old Battery.

A spectacular sited fort with wonderful views of the Solent and the Island. A fascinating history including both World Wars in evocatively brought to life in this historic landmark. Whilst in this area walk on up the hill and explore the site of the 60's and 70's rocket testing station which includes a small museum, which is FREE!

 

Bembridge Windmill.

This picturesque 300 year old windmill is one of the best loved landmarks of the Island, and the only surviving windmill on the Island.

 

Newtown Old Town Hall.

The tiny but intriguing ancient building is the only remaining evidence of the former importance of Newtown - once a bustling and prosperous community is now a peaceful nature reserve.

Unusual 17th century brick and stone building - Fascinating local history dating back to the 13th century - Copies of ancient documents of this once 'Rotten Borough' - and next to Newtown National Nature Reserve with lovely walks and wildlife to discover.

 

There is so much to do and see for all the family, a returning visit will be an absolute must, and The Annexe or Bothy are an ideal place for your base.
